MT2 Firing Range Services, the nation’s largest professional firing range services contractor, announces roll-out of their new (patent-pending) Firing Range Filter Treatment Technology providing a low-cost solution for range owners.
James M. Barthel, President of MT2, stated,
“We are vigilant in our vision to be the premier firing range specialty services company known for our high-level of service and integrity with a higher purpose. It is for this reason that we have launched a brand-new service based on our patent-pending technology that is proven to properly treat all range wastes including the wide variety of air filters, at a 50% cost savings.”
Ranges using this new technology lower their operating costs and receive our “Never Generate Hazardous Waste Guarantee.”
Improper regulatory compliance at firing ranges jeopardizes the personal safety and well-being of employees, shooters and possibly neighbors. MT2 offers comprehensive health and safety plans, along with a detailed waste-management plan to ensure both protection and compliance are maintained. Improperly managed range waste such as filters, debris, soil or other backstop material like rubber, along with incorrectly collected, containerized and stored lead bullets or shot can trigger US EPA RCRA hazardous waste requirements and obligations for a range.
Barthel continued,
“Over the past decade, we have recycled over 15 MILLION pounds of lead, returning over $5,000,000 dollars to ranges owners in lead credits. Based on our commitment, proven track record and adherence to compliance, we are excited to announce our new technology where we are able to save a firing range an average of $10,000 or more annually in management and disposal of their lead contaminated waste.”
MT2 is well known industry wide for being the nation’s #1 largest professional provider of the full scale of outdoor/indoor range environmental, maintenance and construction services; proven at over 2,000 ranges in all 50 states from our nationwide office network.

Shooters who cast their own bullets sometimes scrounge lead from ranges. Should you, as a range owner, allow them to do this? No! Trusting a Professional Firing Range Services Contractor keeps you safe. Lead can be a toxic heavy metal. Allowing someone to dig through a rubber backstop or dirt berm or scoop up spent shot from a trap is going to stir up a lot of lead dust. The person digging for the lead to recast is going to be exposed to potentially high levels of lead. A quick check of how-to videos on Youtube, like this one, show few casters using protective gear when pulling spent bullets from a range, this video shows the person handling the lead bullets with their bare hands! No one has studied the blood lead levels (BLL) of a person after scrounging fire lead projectiles, but The Trace took a look at people who go to ranges to shoot. High blood lead levels (BLL) were found in a significant number of the shooters. Now imagine how much exposure a person will get from actually handling spent bullets and shot. Michigan State University published a brochure for people who cast their own bullets. Among other things, it recommends ventilation gear and protective clothing during the casting process. While they do point out good recommendations, there is much more to consider. The Navy has a 58 page Firing Range Industrial Hygiene Technical Guide covering recommendations on what to wear when cleaning a range, a berm or a bullet trap. Protective gear is necessary, but the guide covers topics such as:
What are you risking by allowing someone to scrounge for old bullets at your range? Are you willing to take the risk of potential legal action if that person later is negatively impacted by lead? The best thing to do with the bullets from a berm or trap is to let a professional handle it for you who also will give you all of the proper documentation showing all lead was properly transported from your range to the correct destination. The post Should You Allow Shooters to Scrounge for Lead on Your Gun Range? appeared first on MT2.com | Firing Range Services | Lead Reclamation & Environmental Remediation. from http://mt2.com/blog/3732-allow-shooters-scrounge-lead-gun-range/ It is important for range owners to properly manage their waste. The management of hazardous waste has specific compliance measures to be taken, but, even if your waste is considered non-hazardous for purposes of disposal, it is still important to ensure that this waste is managed appropriately from “cradle” to grave, and this starts with specific things you can do right now onsite. In this article, we will discuss basic information and DIY tips on how you can manage your lead-containing waste on your range. Recently we contributed to the NSSF blog on an article titled: “Five Tips for Shooting Ranges Onsite Lead Waste Management” where these five topics are covered:
Containerization is an important consideration for a firing range – It is important to use the proper containers for storage of your range waste. Placing waste into an unused corner of a room is not considered proper storage. Eventually, this waste will be transported off-site to an appropriate disposal facility. As such, the best method of storage is to have the waste stored in readily transportable containers. For most ranges, DOT complaint drums and Cubic-Yard (CY) boxes work best.
